Worms and Dirt

Well, the Mitchell's have officially become tree-huggin'-hippy-folk. We have always recycled, gardend and tried to use energy efficient means around the house, but we now can add rain-water collection and composting to our list of earthy things. I have three barrels set up around the house to use for watering our gardens and lawn and with Derek & Aerya's help, we've got two composting stations set up.

The one is a traditional composter for food, paper and other waste. We'll use that product in the gardens next year. I went totally techno though, and got a rolling composter that makes it quite a bit easier on the composter. The second one is for all the pup and kitty waste.

Derek dug me a big-a** hole on the backside of the fence which we then fit a cut up garbage can in.

Then we put a rock base at the bottom and started dumping the poo-poo (we just had to change the cat litter from clay based clumping to a natural one - wheat and sawdust.)

I had ordered some worms on the internet and when they arrived, Aerya and I let them loose on the poo! This stuff we will definately NOT be using. It just drains into the soil and we'll have great grass and not contribute to the huge problem of pet waste in our landfills.
